A head teacher's work is never done - especially if, like Jane Cowan, you are a victim of your own success. Having done well with Wrayford Primary, she's now added the headship of a neighbouring school to her responsibilities. She's also got involved with the village cricket team, with the distinct possibility of a handsome new man in her life. But before she starts her new job, she's hit by a car while cycling. The driver speeds away, and then the two witnesses, an elderly married couple, mysteriously disappear. To add to her troubles, a village worthy constantly interferes in the running of the school, and for some reason no local builder is prepared to renovate her ramshackle house. Just who has Jane offended? Finding out may well have unexpected and tragic consequences.
