In spite of her controlling mother's wishes, twenty-two-year-old Constance leaves the Wairarapa family farm in 1941 for a role in the new Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAFs) at Whenuapai Air Force Base, accompanied by her extroverted cousin Aroha. Constance meets and marries ex-soldier Eddy. Constrained by lack of money and years of enduring Eddy's spendthrift habits, Constance creates systems to prevent him selling the house and buying cars without her consent. Eventually, Eddy and Constance find their way back into their marriage, relieved to discover what they had almost lost.
